Project Blog

Music Video: This project was a great learning experience. I think back to my last project, the commercial, and can see how far I have improved. The fact that I have learned how to adjust music clips, how to add filters, and film scenes more efficiently really shows my improvement over this time. I had a really good time doing this project, too. I actually had a lot of fun filming the scenes and working with my friends. I had fun with this group but I will be changing groups next time. I learned that I should scout out who I will be working with in advance. I like all of my group members, but we did not all work super well with eachother. Regardless, it was a fantastic project. I am ready for our final one to put together everything I have and will continue to learn.

Time to edit

We had all the pieces of our music video. Now, we just had to put them together. Mila and Nicole were our main editors for this project. When we were all together, Nicole and I would press play on the music and the video at the same time to see if they would sync. It was a painfully slow process. Adjusting the music by just one millisecond doesn’t seem like a huge change, but I guarantee you it is. We would add in longer transitions to get the timing right. I would chime in occasionally to point out that we needed to add more music to a certain point. One of the main challenges with the editing was editing the music. Our song has a part in the middle where there is music that doesn’t fit our video. Also, it has a bit of profanity there. We had to cut that part out of the music and skip to the part we keep. This seems simple enough, right? Well I figured we had to keep the transition from one part of the music to the next clean. I wanted it to seem like there was no cut. There were pla

Finishing the filming

Today I continued with filming. After practice that my groupmate Dara and I both have, we both went to her house to film the rest of the video. I had my brother Cole, our main actor, come with us. We started by filming the parts in the flashbacks. We did this first to preserve the daylight. We figured we could film the later parts when it was dark out because the majority of it is inside. I filmed a few shots of Dara and Cole walking together, sitting together, even spinning. They were all filmed relatively close to eachother, but in different enough locations that the audience would not be able to tell. I picked the clips where I though they had the most chemistry. One of them includes a part where they are sitting on the steps together, and Cole got dog poop on his shoe. I actually love this clip because it seems the most natural, as Dara is laughing and Cole is flailing and laughing trying to get it off. Then I filmed the part where he goes to visit her at her house. We used the do

Filming challenge

Today I refilmed a particular part of our music video. I noticed that one of the scenes seemed a bit weird. It is supposed to show our main character flop onto his bed and then it transitions to the next scene. However it is supposed to be timed with the music. There are four beats that he falls back on. In the original shot, I tried to maneuver the camera on beat. However this did not exactly work. The camera work was sloppy. It seemed very jolty and jerky. I wanted to somehow hit the beats of the music. But that didn’t seem to be working out. I filmed it a few times today, trying new ways each time. I would zoom in, zoom out, go side to side. Nothing seemed to be working. I finally resolved to sacrifice hitting the beats. Instead, I tilted the camera slowly and moved it above him. I didn’t love not hitting the beats of the music. However, it was a compromise I was willing to make. In the end, I ended up using the slow glide over our actor. It seemed smoother and more profesional. I

Let the filming begin!

Today I filmed the scenes with just our main charachter in it. We are using my brother as that actor. I asked him to film while he was laying in bed, so the scenery was conveniently set up. I was worried that becuase this video is supposed to be filmed during the day time, I couldn't film at night. But because of my schedule and our actor's schedule, we don't really have time to film during the day. However, the lighting is supposed to be dark and moody anyway. So, it is ok to film the parts that I filmed at night with a lamp on. I filmed and re filmed a few of our scenes.  I started by setting an alarm on his phone that would go off at 6:54, and filmed before it went off to catch the moment it did. I ended up having to redo this part, and so we set another alarm for 6:56. The next scenes using a phone, our actor is supposed to text a number that is his ex girlfriend. We used my phone number for him to text, and staged some fake previous texts. We then turned on my read re
